It’s another hot, humid, and beautiful day in New Orleans, let’s see what’s going on in the rest of the country..
Milk Crate Theft: When I worked as a barista in Portland I used to laugh at the stern warnings of fines or imprisonment printed on milk crates for using them improperly, “Unauthorized use of milk cases illegal. Fine of $300 or imprisonment up to 90 days, Pennsylvania Law Act No. 37 1987.” Somebody call the milk police, because Portlanders sure love to strap crates onto their bicycles! I was surprised to learn the penalties are not some relic of the early 1900s, this article by Andrew Jenner on Modern Farmer reveals why milk crate misuse is a serious problem.
Farm Bill Policy: The saga of finalizing the 2012 Farm Bill has been drawn out way beyond it’s initial deadline. Despite the nearing expiration date of the extension, Congress seems no closer to coming to an agreement on the course of action the country should take. The farm bill has huge implications on both agriculture and public health. The House has passed a version of the bill that cuts the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which would have devastating affects on the 47+ million of Americans who rely on food stamps to help feed their families. The LA Times published an op-ed today by Senators Bob Dole and Tom Daschle urging Congress to “stop playing politics with hunger.” For the most recent updates on the farm bill head over to Farm Policy a website that publishes daily summaries of news related to US farm policy.
Healthy Habits: The New York Times reported on a study published in the journal Pediatrics that found, “Teenagers are now exercising more, consuming less sugar, and eating more fruits and vegetables.” This is good news for researchers studying obesity, but it is not quite as promising as the headline suggests as the story becomes more complicated when the findings are dissected. These mushroom burgers with asian slaw from Sprouted Kitchen sound like something I’d like to get into this week, per usual, the recipe is served with some inspiring real talk.
Monsanto: Consider signing Food Democracy Now’s petition to “Stop the Monsanto Protection Act” that encourages Congress members to strike the “farmer’s assurance provision” from the Continuing Resolutions Spending bill (H.J.RES.59).
